Camera Terms

There are a lot of camera terms to know in photography but there are also acronyms and brand specific terms to know. Whether you’re a pro or beginner, read below for common terms used in photography:

Aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. Larger the aperture (low number like f/1.2), the more light entering and greater separation of the field of depth.

Advanced Photo System type-C (APS-C) is refers to “cropped” cameras that do not have full frame sensors.

Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens.

Chromatic Aberration (CA) is an effect resulting from dispersion in which there is a failure of a lens to focus all colors to the same convergence point. It can be seen by a blurred colors often around edges.

Focal length of the lens is the distance between the lens and the image sensor when the subject is in focus.

Full frame refers to cameras that have 35mm format image sensors.

Image stabilization (IS) is a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera or other imaging device during exposure.

Stepper Motor (STM) is a newer focus motor designed to be quieter and smoother during video recording. Downside is that these lenses are focus-by-wire, which means the focus ring isn’t attached to a mechanical mechanism at all and they won’t move when the camera is off.

UltraSonic Motor (USM) is a type of electric motor powered by the ultrasonic vibration of a component, the statur, placed against another component, the rotor or slider depending on the scheme of operation (rotation or linear translation).
